For normal use, no connection is needed

Blueprints checks in with the Vetra service and caches a signed licence. It keeps working on that cache for up to 14 days with no connection at all. In practice you will never notice a check happening.

Works with no connection

  • Building, and everything you do while building
  • Capturing Versions
  • Comparing Versions, and the whole history
  • Groups, anchors and pivots
  • The Migration Assistant
  • Restore and rollback
  • Adapters, including third-party ones
  • Exporting a package, and importing one
That last point is the important one: moving a build between your own servers by file never needs the internet. See Export and import.

Needs the connection while you use it

  • Remote Deploy
  • Sending Version packages between servers through Vetra

If Vetra is down

Your server keeps running and the data on it is untouched. Cloud features are unavailable until the service is back. The status reads GRACE, described as “Vetra cannot be reached”. That is not an accusation and not a fault on your side: the overwhelmingly likely cause of an unreachable service is that something on the network is down. It resolves itself.
A denial and an outage never read the same. “Vetra cannot be reached” is an outage. “Vetra says no” is a denial, and it is never reachable from a network failure.

Past the window

If an outage runs past the 14-day window, the cached licence expires and Blueprints stops. Your data stays on your server throughout. Nothing is deleted, nothing is altered, and nothing needs recovering. Restore outbound HTTPS to the internet and it recovers on the next check.

What “outbound HTTPS” means

Blueprints makes outbound HTTPS requests from your server. It does not need an inbound port, a static IP, or anything opened in a firewall for incoming traffic. If your host blocks outbound HTTPS by default, that is the thing to ask them about.

Timeline

1

Verified

A successful check. The licence is signed with a short lease.
2

Cached

Inside the lease, running from disk. Normal, and what you are in most of the time between checks.
3

Grace

Past the lease and unable to reach Vetra. Everything local keeps working, and the status output shows the deadline.
4

Expired

Past the window. Blueprints stops until it can check in. Data untouched.
